About Benetech: technology innovation/social conscience

The Most Powerful Force on Earth is the Human Mind

At Benetech, we’re combining that power with a deep passion for social improvement. Our goal is simple: to create new technology solutions that serve humanity and empower people to improve their lives. Day by day, we’re helping build a better, safer world

"There is no other organization in the world doing this kind of work, which is vital in the struggle for the protection of human rights and the pursuit of justice." - Dr. Todd Landman, Human Rights Center, University of Essex

Big Ideas, Huge Impact

Together with partners and supporters worldwide, we use technology innovation and business expertise to solve unmet social needs. Leveraging the intellectual capital and resources of Silicon Valley, we create solutions that are truly life-changing. Our global endeavors have been instrumental in improving literacy, human rights and landmine detection. With expanded support, we can accomplish much more.

Opening Doors Everywhere

Our programs are impacting the lives of thousands of individuals and families, every single day.

  • Bookshare.org. For people with vision and reading disabilities, we have formed the world's largest accessible digital library of scanned material.

  • Route 66 Literacy. To improve literacy, we founded a web-based program that enables anyone who is literate to help teenagers and adults learn to read and write.

  • Human Rights. We provide science and information technology to human rights advocates, strengthening their pursuit of justice and reconciliation.

  • Landmine Detection. We are adapting advanced military de-mining tools to safely rid the world of this deadly hazard.

Return on Humanity

Our business model is similar to that of a technology startup. We have a senior management team with depth of expertise in technology, intellectual property law, licensing venture fund management and public service. Needs and opportunities where technology could have a tremendous impact are identified and explored. Then we follow our careful, proven process for determining the viability of new ideas. We are pragmatic idealists, willing to take measured risks for big social payoffs.

We join forces with strategic partners and philanthropic investors who share our zeal to better the world. Together, we build practical solutions that meet critical needs in the non-profit sector. Our return on investment is not measured in dollars, but in the number of lives we affect. This return on humanity will pay off for generations to come.

Born to Serve: A history of Benetech

Benetech emerged out of the pioneering work for Arkenstone, the world leader in reading machines for the blind. Seeing the value in providing affordable tools that greatly empowered the reading disabled, Jim Fruchterman was inspired to found a business that utilized technology to serve social causes. Benetech was born.
